Partition tables do not "go bad", but drives most certainly do.
Run
smartctl -a /dev/sdb | less and look for errors. In particular, look for the line saying "SMART overall-health self-assessment test result". Anything other than "PASSED" means the drive needs to be replaced immediately.
Also, the following parameters may tell you if the drive is bad, even if the self-assessment says "PASSED":
Reallocated_Sector_Ct (should be 0 or at least in the single-digits)
Reallocated_Event_Ct (as above)
Current_Pending_Sector (a drive going bad will show a non-zero value)
Power_On_Hours (consumer-class drives cannot be expected to last more than 2 to 3 years, which translate to 17,520 and 26,280 hours respectively)
