/boot full - update woes

Friends,

I have a server CentOS 4.N

when attempting a standard update -- i got a complaint that :
"... Test install failed because of PKG conflicts
installing package kernal - smp-2.6.9.78.0.22.el needs 376 KB on the /boot
file sys ..."

wow so -- i ran out of room?

a df - h shows
/dev/mapper/Volgroup00-LogVol00
145G 7.1G 131G 6% /
/dev/sda1 99M 90M 4.5M 96% /boot <<< rekon thars the problem
none 505M 0 505 0% /dev/shm

so -----------

can I dlt 'old-kernals' ?
should i use gparted to expand my /boot and if so is there a suggested
size
gee.... 99M sure seems small ( what was i thinking when i built this?!? )

any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks !

I would remove old kernel images. How many do you have? My boot has always been 32 mb and I thought it was really large, I've never even hit the 16 mark.

# uname -a <-- determine which kernel you're actively using

# rpm -qa | grep kernel <-- identify the others and remove them via yum or rpm

what i did

i did a : uname -r

and saw I had several kernels
42... , ...55... , ....67...

I also did a du -s /boot/* | sort -n
this stacked them up nice & neet.

maybe I should have done a
yum remove .... but i didn't

what i did do is
( from within /boot )
a /bin/rm /boot/*42* and a
a /bin/rm /boot/*55*

I thought I would keep the "...67..."
( my current kernel is 2.6.9-78.0.8

my space in /boot went from 96% use to 45% used

and I can update....

so my Q would be

would a yum remove been better or the same -- what do you think?

You should have used a package manager (yum or rpm) to do this. Now their package database contains information about packages that do not exist or are incomplete on the filesystem. (You should still be able to "remove" them using your package manager at this point.)
