Auto startup service

I use RHEL 3 server , I have installed apache server and it can be started by "/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start" , I have to add a link to /etc/init.d "ln -s usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl . " , but I found that this service do not auto start after reboot ( but I can use /etc/init.d/apachectl start" to start it ) , can advise what is wrong ? how can I add it to auto startup ? thx

Since you have installed apache compiled from source, you cannot use the default rhel "service httpd start" or "chkconfig http on", unless you change the /etc/init.d/httpd that ships with a default rhel apache installation.
You can put the command "/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start" in /etc/rc.d/rc.local, so the command is executed at system startup.
