auto.master syntax

In Redhat or Centos, the file /etc/auto.master has a line:

+auto.master

This appears quite self-referential. We are already inside the auto.master file, after all. Why does it need to reference itself? If this line were missing, what would happen? Can someone explain the purpose of it. Thanks.

Loads the auto.master map from NIS or NIS+ if you use them and have nsswitch.conf configured correctly.
