Apache 2 .htaccess

Hello,

I am having a slight issue with htaccess files. I have a lot of directories within a main directory. Each sub directory of the main has a htaccess file in it as does the main directory. All directories are served via one virtual host. The problem that i am having is that the server is reading the htaccess file in the main directory rather than the sub directory. Anyone have any ideas?

I know how to do it but found this example which is really good:

"You could put a .htaccess in the root of each virtual host, or you could create a subdirectory within the Apache config directory, containing a config file per vhost with the proper directives -- such as usr/local/apache2/conf/vhosts-protection. Then, in httpd.conf,
you could write

+ This means you can think of .htaccess files as dynamically adding the following to the master
Apache configuration:
- {{{
- Include /usr/local/apache2/conf/vhosts-protection/*.conf
- }}}
-
- '''/usr/local/apache2/conf/vhosts-protection/vhost-1.conf'''
- {{{
- <Directory /var/www/html/vhost-1>
- AuthType Basic
- AuthName "Authentication Required"
- AuthUserFile /etc/htpasswd/vhost-1/.htpasswd
- Require valid-user
-
- Order allow,deny
- Allow from all
- </Directory>
- }}}
-
- And so on for the rest of your virtual hosts."

These aren't seperate v-hosts. It is one vhost that has many subdirs each with their own .htaccess file. If i had to create a separate dir directive for them all it would take days.

my thoughts...

first, are you actually using apache? An earlier *reply* mentions apache, and it sounds like you're talking about apache. But, is it apache, and what version of apache?

Presuming apache (something modern like 2.x), first be aware that it is *supposed* to read the per-directory access control file (ACF) in every directory along the path to the target of the access.

So I'm going to guess you really mean that configuration options you put in the sub-dir ACF aren't being applied as you wish.

ACFs are usually named ".htaccess" or "htaccess" but that is completely configurable. First make sure you have the filename right in the sub-directories. You could have some odd server config that makes the ACF filename different in the subdirectories.

Still no luck?

Try putting an intentional mistake into one of your ACFs ... misspell something. Then access a target in that directory and your server error log should warn you of the error. This verifies that it is actually noticing and attempting to apply your ACF from that sub-directory.

At this point you should either have to figure out why isn't it reading your ACF (file permissions maybe?) or why your configuration in the ACF isn't doing what you want.

I am using apache 2.2.3.

The name of the file is correct. I have checked the file perms and everyone can read. I have renamed the authname of the upper most htaccess file and it will display my changes once saved. If completely remove the upper most htaccess file, it allows me access without any prompt.

The way this is setup is like this:

I have one main index page that lists a lot of different site names in clickable links. This main page is: http://site.domain.com/cgi-bin/wisp/util.fcgi/ (main htaccess in /cgi-bin/wisp) That fcgi script there parses a mrtg config with all the sites listed and generates an index from it. The clickable links that it uses are in the format of the following: http://site.domain.net/cgi-bin/wisp/util.fcgi/SITE/ where the site after the fcgi is the actual graphs. Once you click on that the fcgi script parses the config for that site and generates graphs... this is where i believe the problem exists. The directory where the graph pictures, etc. are stored are in a totally different directory structure from the fcgi script. So, the individualized htaccess files for each site are actually located in /var/www/html/wisp/SITE. This was working previously. I have attached the old httpd.conf.

oh! this sheds a lot of light...

so the main(first) access is to /cgi-bin/wisp/util.fcgi and the subsequent clicks are also on that exact same target. Yes, with "/SITE" added on as PATH_INFO, but Apache is accessing the same 'util.cfgi' in the wisp directory, so only the ACF in the wisp directory applies. Apache doesn't "go into" the 'SITE' directory looking for the target object to satisfy the request -- and will therefore never care about an ACF in some other directory that your fcgi happens to look at (via it's algorithm and the given PATH_INFO.)

what config options/changes are you trying to implement in the ACFs in those SITE directories...

and I don't see your httpd conf attached (not sure that I need to read it though...)

I noticed you said it used to work... let's call it the "second tree"; where all the site dirs are. That second tree is totally out of the picture from apache's point of view. Apache looks in your cgi-bin/wisp dir for the ACF. fires up that fcgi and passes the PATH_INFO (the site specifier in your application) and sits back while the fcgi cranks out output.

What are you trying to accomplish via the per-dir ACF(s) in each SITE dir?

I am trying to give each site their own user/pass to access their dir/site/graphs.

oh. you can't do that...

apache will secure the single target -- that FCGI in the wisp directory. But that's it. It's just one single thing from apache point of view. The way to fix this is to implement he security in your FCGI; cookie-based login or something. But that (implementing http security) is non-trivial. Not brain surgery, but not a five-minute fix.

So, how here's a way to make it work with minimum hacking... how about this: (and this is ugly, but it would work)

Put security on the CFGI itself. Setup a pasword file with all the user/pass combos in it. Then in the FCGI, look at the USER_NAME (check apache docs, I might have that misspelled) environment variable. That will tell you what user the FCGI is servicing. Then, put a little text file in each SITE dir that contains a list of the valid user. In your FCGI, look in the file and make sure the user is listed before servicing the request.

Or easier, but more hackish: make their login be the site name exactly... then you don't have to manage those text files per-site and you don't have to code that.

problems:

people need to give a valid user/pass to see the list of sites. and they can still see all the different sites -- an info leak -- without having a valid user/pass for each site.

But really, the whole layout of the entire thing isn't how I'd design it. (And I'm not into designing things for free, for fun.) So unless you have more ACF-related questions... I'll leave to your own devices.

Best of luck,
-c

I never really did ask how you would design it, did I? And this worked for quite a long time before the upgrade.

Thanks for your help...

start with what was upgraded... (totally guessing here) maybe from an old apache that used to look down the path_info trail for ACF files... maybe there's a way to turn that back on...
