A sever for files and network usage

I'm still a noob to linux mostly. I'm running ubuntu desktop 7.04. I'm going off to college soon so I want to turn it into a sever. I want to be able to use this several for a couple of things first off. I want to try and keep it as a desktop to play with . I also want to be able to securely access it for I can retrieve or put files on it. I know for that I will probably need ssh, right? Also I want to be able to use it for another function. Since colleges are monitoring their networks, I want to be able to access my machine and use its internet connectoin so my traffic will be secure and encrypted.

I was wondering what your thoughts were on this. I found an article that might have what I want, but I don't know. Here is the link:

Srry, I will post the link in a moment.

Thanks for the help.
