ssh - protocol mismatch

I am trying to set up and use an SSH tunnel with my web browser,
on linux (Mandrake 10.1). I am signed up for a service that allows
use of an SSH proxy.

First, I set up the tunnel in linux like this, using 'ssh' ..

ssh -L 1088:REMOTEMACHINE.COM:80 USERNAME@REMOTEMACHINE.COM

This, I assume, will use REMOTEMACHINE.COM's port 80 when
I access my localhost port 1088, all over an SSH tunnel.

I am prompted for a password. I enter it. REMOTEMACHINE.COM
sends me a message that the tunnel is running. It seems to be
running fine, it just sits there at this point not returning to the
prompt, and I assume it is running OK.

Now, in mozilla or in konqueror (my browsers), I set up to use a proxy.
I have tried this with SOCKS, SSL, and HTTP proxies. (Which should I
use?) I set up gthe proxy to be:

ip port
127.0.0.1 1088

The proxy seems to be accepted. But, when I surf to any page, I get
this in my browser:

SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_3.9p1
Protocol mismatch.

Any ideas what on earth is wrong here?

Am I setting up the proxy wrong?

Is something interfering with this working properly?

I never set up any keys of any kind with ssh_keygen .. do I need to?
Should I? What happens if I don't. How do I do that anyway?

scvarious,

It may be possible that the remote host may be having problems with the SSH protocol you are trying to use (SSH1 vs. SSH2)

Try setting up the SSH config file /etc/ssh/ssh_config according to the remote hosts's requirements.

If that doesn't help. try upgrading to OpenSSH 4.x
