permission problem with bluetooth connection

Hi,

I have a Dell M1210 laptop with openSuSE 10.2 and it recognizes the bluetooth device but my cellphone cannot see the laptop even if I enable inquiry and page scan through YaST. However, if I set up the bluetooth device using hciconfig as root, everything works fine.

Previously I had openSuSE 10.1 and no problem connecting.

I think this is due to a permission problem that prevents me from using the device. If I use hcitool with a non-root user, I can see the device and I can scan:

Code:
$ hcitool dev
Devices:
        hci0    00:16:41:89:BF:09
$ hcitool scan
Scanning ...
        00:16:B8:33:12:80       Trident
        00:10:C6:64:D0:0D       LATITUDE
but I cannot get info (hcitool info) or connect to other devices (hcitool cc):

Code:
$ hcitool info 00:16:B8:33:12:80
Requesting information ...
Can't create connection: Operation not permitted
If I try hcitool with root, I can get info and I also can connect to my cellphone; and if I enable page and inquiry scan through hciconfig (not YaST) when I am root, my cellphone can also see my laptop.

So it seems to be some kind of permission problem, right? What causes this problem? Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Find out which devices it uses first?

I am not sure if 'hci0' is what you are asking:

Code:
# hciconfig -a hci0
hci0:   Type: USB
        BD Address: 00:16:41:89:BF:09 ACL MTU: 384:8 SCO MTU: 64:8
        UP RUNNING PSCAN ISCAN
        RX bytes:77 acl:0 sco:0 events:9 errors:0
        TX bytes:31 acl:0 sco:0 commands:8 errors:0
        Features: 0xff 0xff 0x9f 0xfe 0x9b 0xf9 0x00 0x80
        Packet type: DM1 DM3 DM5 DH1 DH3 DH5 HV1 HV2 HV3
        Link policy:
        Link mode: SLAVE ACCEPT
        Name: 'Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Internal Car'
        Class: 0x000000
        Service Classes: Unspecified
        Device Class: Miscellaneous,
        HCI Ver: 2.0 (0x3) HCI Rev: 0x976 LMP Ver: 2.0 (0x3) LMP Subver: 0x976
        Manufacturer: Cambridge Silicon Radio (10)
I don't know how to find out to which device (under /dev) this bluetooth device is mapped. :-} It should be one of the USB devices, but how can I find out which one?

Looking a bit further you're right, this isn't as obvious and I haven't found device either except for a row of "/dev/ttyU?" ones and that only after reading some Holtmann docs. You may want to use sudo as a temporary workaround.
