passwd reset problem

Trying to reset a user passwd as root using passwd uid. I get this passwd: Module is unknown.

Help!

The path might not be included in your profile. Try /sbin/passwd or /etc/passwd.

Maybe you could give us some more info as far as your distro and version of linux you are using.

I did a google search with "passwd: module is unknown" and got a few hits suggesting it may be something corrupted with pam.

Edit: also, right after you try it, maybe you could do a "tail /var/log/messages" and post anything that looks remotely relavant.
