PAM and vsftp

I've been successfully using vsftp for months now, however recently I have gotten a socket error. I can log into the ftp, however it fails immediatly afterwords. In my /var/log/messages file i get the error: vsftpd: PAM-listfile: Couldn't open /etc/ftpusers I haven't changed any of my ftp configuration files and don't know why PAM is suddenly trying to authenticate users with a file that doesn't exits. Thanks for your thoughts.
