Question nmap


what is a good program for warning me when somone is pinging me or nmaping me? Im running Slackware 8.1

Try iptables

You could set up iptables to deny or drop all icmp packets and then set up the appropriate logging. Then all you would have to do is check your logs periodically.

You could use something like scanlogd. You might get a lot of false alarms if you send alerts for ICMP traffic. Some large content providers are now pinging their clients before resolving server names so they can minimize lag times.

You might want to try PortSentry also.
http://www.psionic.com/products/portsentry.html

It has it's own wrapper functionality for deny through xinetd, and inetd, or you can plug it into iptables, or ipchains~
