Does anyone know how I can log into the Linux console remotely? I need to run an Oracle install. In the past, I have set the UNIX DISPLAY variable so the Linux server knows where to send the output to the Hummingbird Exceed display server on my PC. However, this Oracle install will be to a remote server, not on a LAN.
Does anyone know how I can log into the Linux console remotely?
Yes.
Was that all you wanted to know? (google for `yes or no questions')
Seriously though: ssh, rlogin or telnet.
with ssh, your connection gets encrypted, with the other two they don't. So use ssh.
In order to use it, the machine you want to ssh to needs to run sshd. When I installed sshd, the install script automagically made sure it ran, so I don't know how to do *that* manually.
If you want to log into a linux box from a windows box, use PuTTY. Google for it.
If you want to run some programs on the remote machine, then `resume' them from the machine you're at, run those programs in screen.
Jonas, the problem has more to do with being able to run an X Windows application remotely and receive the output to a display server running on my local PC. Currently, I use Exceed from Hummingbird as a X windows server on my PC. In my situation, I am trying to start up the Oracle installer application. At the shell, the command would be "RunInstaller" to start the Oracle installer. However, before running the installer, the DISPLAY environment variable must be set. However, on a remote PC client behind a home office router, the Oracle installer would never find my IP address, because it is only unique to my home office network.
