What are you using to host the ftp server? VSFTP?
youd probably
chmod u+w pub
(or change pub to whatever directory also, if he doesnt have a username, do this instead of the chmod u+w pub: chmod a+r pub)
(if it is an anonomous user, do the steps below)
and enable this in the /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
anon_upload_enable=YES
and take the # away from it if thier is one.
