GKRELLM and systemmon shows small net usage but firestarter and netstat show nothing.

Hi,
I'm on debian 5.0 lenny.

Every 45 seconds the system monitor, and gkrellm reports that I'm sending 250 bytes for 5 seconds and sending 25 bytes for 3 seconds.

netstat -e shows nothing.
netstat -ano shows a whole bunch of connections going from 0.0.0.0 to 0.0.0.0.

Is this something I need to worry about?

I just installed a network printer. Could it also be my router communicating with my box?

Edit:

Stupid me. It was my laptop running Windows Vista.
Nevermind.

Just curious, what is the average up and down to connect to a router. Is my router ever supposed to give or receive data after I've already connected to it?

I would suggest that you install wireshark, it is in the stable repos, and although you have to run it as route it will detail each, all and any packet flying round your network and you can 'drill down' in the lower pane to see exactly what is contained in each packet. It also tracks all your internet traffic so it is a) not wise to continue a capture when you download something or watch a movie, flash or the like, and b) not wise to save such captures to file unless you have enormous harddrives, because the 'log' files get big pretty quickly.

I am always amused to find that samba, when I have it running, does a broadcast to my wifi ISP's access point every 2 and 1/2 minutes - no response because it is a linux server, but it does transmit my internal 'private' IP addresses.

Hope this helps
