Generating SHA-512 certificates

I was told SHA-256 was being replaced by SHA-512 for my organization. I need to generate new.509 cert to reflect this..how do I do this on redhat 6? Not a PKI expert so apologies in advance. I know I need to generate the certs on the server to get public/private jet then send to RA to sign.
