Encrypting a hard drive with opensuse

What is the correct or safest way to encrypt and password protect an external hard drive? The hard drive has data already on it.

if there is data on the drive, then you can not encrypt the drive. full disk encryption, from what i understand, is done at format time.

now you can tar up the data and then pass encryption to the tarball, but that will not make it near as easy to access.
