directory permissiona & APT

I am trying to harden a couple of things and wanted to know if I change permissions in the /etc/init./ and /etc/rc* directories in debian can apt still write in them? I imagine that it should be able to do it since I start it as root, but want to make sure w/ someone who knows more than me
thanks

How drastic a change are you proposing?

My MEPIS box has a mixture of 775 & 755 permissions on those dirs. I suspect 750 or 700 wouldn't hurt anything.
