default permissions

I wasn't sure what forum to put this under so I choose this one.
While installing winr and CoD all my file permissions got screwed

Now my entire system has a permission of 777

Is there any way to return default permissions to the system?

sorry I'm running Ubuntu ( debian based)

Not easily, I'm afraid. I suppose you could try using dpkg to do a reinstall of the base system packages and hope those reset the base directory permissions. Or, you can do it by hand, give /tmp and /var/tmp 1755 permission, /home/* 0700, etc, although, in all honesty, it's probably best just to reinstall.

Sounds like you've learned the lesson all *nix admins learn, which is to be careful with the superuser account.
