Ooh, I know this one:
Code:
$ passwd
That's the command to type from a terminal application. If that doesn't ring any bells, what Linux distro / version are you using? (There may be a GUI solution to the same problem.)

Question can't boot up malformed line 54 in source list

Can't boot up. I get things like cannot remove '/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/*'"no such file or directory setting up avg 85flx (8.5.732)
Installing 'avgd' service initscrips errors while processing avg 85flx malformed line 54 in source list/etc/apt/sources.list (dist purse) list of sources could not be read.

Do I have a virus? I have not been able to boot up and get into my Linux for a long time. I want to use it. I have downloaded a new Ubuntu. I also use Windows. Can I just overwrite the Ubuntu program I have? And do a dual boot?

Malformed line in sources.list... that is a whole other can of worms (nothing to do with your original topic).

If you'd like to install the new Ubuntu, then - sure - you can install it over the top of your existing installation. And at install time, you can specify that it will dual boot with Windows.

If you have other questions about installing Ubuntu, then please start a new thread in this subforum:

If you want to change the root password, you need to do this, of course:

Code:
# passwd
