Question Autostart for inserted medium in Linux

My Linux MEPIS 3.43 Control Center has an interesting option under the following menu path: Control Center -- Peripherals -- Storage Media -- Advanced

Specifically, I can check or uncheck a box that says:

>>Enable medium application autostart after mount<<

My question is:

Is the advanced option in question the same as "autoplay" in Windows? Since Windows "autoplay" is a potential security issue, and this could be a Linux equivalent, I decided to post here in the security forum.

Your thoughts? Thanks!

It depends if you allow binary or script execution with autoplay. But if you only allow playing of the media files or opening of documents, then it's not really a problem. You'll only be aware of the application's vulnerability exploits.

I mean its ok really...if you are finicky abour autoplay...do 1 thing...tick that box .. disable autoplay...

Each time u pop a CD/DVD in .. mount it using ..

mount /dev/xxx /mnt/directory u create and play ur stuff from there...

live_dont_exist........do you mean....

....uncheck it? The default is for the box to be checked. Thus, I assume, the default is for autoplay to be turned on. So, I assume you mean "untick" that box then use the command line prompts to proceed? Is that correct? Just curious because if I do "untick" that box, then my drive icons (harddrive icons, dvd drive icons, etc) disappear....

Just checking to make sure I understood you correctly. Thanks again!

Yeah thats what I meant .. the drive icons vanishing are fine .. those are just shortcuts .. my guess is that when you do a manual mount the icons should reappear based on which device you've mounted...

ping back if still problems...

Cheers
