Apache as folder owner

Heya.

Because of SElinux + php safe mode I was forced to set apache as owner of my httpdocs directory to allow php to write xml files with fopen.

Is this a major security no-no ? I've been trying to think what could go wrong (all folders are 755, all php files are 644) but I don't know linux or apache well enough.

If anyone could tell me why I shouldn't let Apache own the folder, that would be great. Alternatively, a different solution would also be smashing
