Anyway to use rsync ssh without allowing root access?

Apparently rsync wants to use "root" to get into the remote machine to copy a file over... but all my machines I prevent root from ever logging in through ssh.

Anyway around this without opening up root?

I'm wanting to sync files from one machine to another, so that both have the same data... and I am trying to make it automated (scripted), with no human intervention involved (which is proving more of a pain in the arse than anything it seems!)
