Until we moved three years ago, I still had my 24 3.5" disk that I downloaded in 1993 in order to have Slackware. I started to buy CDs as soon as they were available, mostly Slackware, Red Hat, Mandrake, and even a lousy Corel Linux that was truly a waste of time. Now my oldest commercial Linux CDs are from 2000. :-(
Distribution: 12.04.2 have had rh9.0 checking now ,dsl, ubuntu, pclos, smoothwall3,fedora,mandravia,

This was my first Linux install from a box set I purchased at Comp USA - Suse 7.2.
From the mid-late 1990's but don't remember what year for sure.
Also SimplyMEPIS 3.4-3 CD - that is the one that converted me to Debian based distros.
I use Debian and Ubuntu/Mint flavors now.
I have original Red Hat version 4 on CDs around here that I am now looking for. However, my oldest install of Linux is on floppies and is still here somewhere (even if the floppies are no longer viable).
I have been playing music at a dance all night. Tomorrow I'll dig out more old storage boxes. I wondered why I was saving all that *old* stuff.
Way back mid '93 a friend dropped by my house (we had met doing UNIX/C work for the phone company) and handed me this cd.
No markings, not even a sleeve or case, just the bare naked cd. Couldn't even tell which side was up.
This a current ls listing from my MacBook showing a date of August 1993 with apparent Slackware version 1.02 (put the disk in upside down the first time):
Not quite sure what he said next or if I understood what he saying. He was mumbling something about UNIX or rather he was mumbling the word UNIX. He stated that I/we would be running this. Not a demand. Not a recommendation. Just some almost out-of-body hypnotic statement that this is a nice big wave and we will be catching it right now. He had a happy and mischievous look in his eyes and was nearly giggling with excitement. Yikes, what? The next thing I know (with a massive technical hardware study and setup effort) I have Slackware running on my Hot and Expensive Powerhouse Pentium 90. Then on my 386/33. Have had a linux machine running nearly continuously since. Kept up with Slackware for a long time. Always trying new ones. Currently have 6 machines all running recent versions of Fedora.
Being an out-of-control media and book collector (collect 'em all!) I started buying the commercial disks offered at local bookstores. The first one being:
And here is my giant Rubbermaid box of valuable cd cases and cardboard sleeves.
