What Is The Oldest Linux Installation CD You Have?
 

Just found these two (both from early 1996) and thought we could have a little fun. The member who posts a genuine picture of the oldest Linux installation CD they have in their possession by September 4th will be upgraded to a contributing member and will be able to pick one item out of the LQ Merchandise Store paid for by me.

Oldest installation medium I have is a Debian Jessie usb. I don't keep old cd's for the most part. Although I wish I had kept my Libranet CD's. I miss that OS, and would love to install it on a VM for old times sake.

actually this came up on the fedora lists recently - FC6. As that really isn't all that old I won't even bother with the pic (a CD with FC6 written on it)

I have CDs for:

Suse 6.0 (purchased, 2000)
Red Hat 7.1 (Seawolf - not RHEL, but the previous "7.1" from 2002, purchased)
Debian Potato (downloaded, burned to CD-R)

I actually got bored not too long ago and read the RH7.1 installation guide just for kicks.

I have Slackware 96 from Walnut Creek, which is the oldest in my CD database (Slackware 3.1, 1996 obviousy). It is a 4-CD set and came with 36 page installation gude and registration card, all pictured below. I first installed this on a Sharp 120mhz pentium notebook, 32MB RAM, 1.2GB hard drive.

While browsing my old CDs I found these, mostly still in vivid memory as well...

Suse 6.1 (1999) with a very nice, printed 440 page companion book. This was the first GNU/Linux that I actively pushed to my own users - the very nice printed book seemed to make the difference between someone trying it or simply sticking the CD into a drawer and forgetting about it - I distributed several sets of these. Also ran well on the same Sharp 120mhz notebooks.

Mandrake 7.2 from Linux Format magazine, (1999?). Linux Format magazine used to include installation CDs wrapped with the magazine, and this one introduced me to Mandrake. It quickly replaced Suse 6.1 for personal use, and led to Mandrake/Mandriva being my recommended and supported distro for others all the way down to Mandriva 2006. Mandriva's early adoption of KDE4 created many problems for me as I had to support all those nice people who were now using Mandriva Linux on my recommendation, which drove me back to Slackware, all for good! I still have a boxed Mandriva Powerpack set or two laying around as well!

And finally, an Infomagic 6-disc set from 1999 which includes Red Hat 6, Caldera 2.2, Suse 6.1, Slackware 4.0, Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux and other assorted goodies.

Plus there is a old made on the fly KDE 3 http://www.nimblex.net/index.php?start=6 cd I made with the NimbleX live cd generator long ago on my cd rack.
Which looks to be non existent now. You could build your iso online and then download what you made. Mine were 200MB or so.

See, choice was good. Back then.

Red Hat Linux Bible, with discs circa 2002, but I've moved three times since then so I doubt I have it anymore.

Old Slackware 2 (1994)
 

I have one Slackware 2.1.0 from 1994, one slackware 3.0 from nov-1995 and other versions: SuSE Linux 5.2 (1998), SuSE Linux 6.0 (1999), RedHat 6.0 (1999), Gento linux (2000), ubuntu 5.04 (2004).
That have kept because in some time these were my favorites, and I prefered SuSE over others.

The first was the RedHat 6.0. After that Debian 2.0 is the Hungarian magazine Chip. If you want to display graphics had to be paid to the kernel.

I bought my first "cd-player" long after my first linux installations (needless to post a picture as it's just a blue floppy).

These are the oldest I could find. I'm pretty sure I only played with the Redhat one and not the other 2.
