On may 20, Slackware released it's 64bit version to the public.
We have been silently working on a port to the x86_64 architecture since September 2008. Many of the developer team's main computers are running
slackware64 for several months already.
In order to give this new branch to the Slackware tree some wider exposure and testing, we decided to upload it to our mirrors. This will give us the opportunity to get the less obvious bugs found and fixed before the release of Slackware 13.0.
The
slackware64-current development tree is functionally identical to its 32bit companion.
We intend to keep developing the 32bit and 64bit ports in parallel. For this purpose we have unified the source directories as much as possible.
You can find the full announcement by Patrick Volkerding on the
Slackware homepage. The
ChangeLog.txt is still fairly short at the moment ;-)
Cheers, Eric
