yum update wont work

Hi there all, I am pretty new to linux in general but the biggest problem I have been having of late is getting yum to update.

I have set it all up as per the tutorial "Fedora Core 4 Installation Notes" (sorry i can't post a link as it won't let me).
I put in "yum update" when I had finished configuring yum and it went through a process of setting up repositories and setting things for update. At the end it said 590 (somethings) set for update, total download size will be 1.5GB is this ok. I typed in "y" and it started to download all the 590 things. It didn't say anything like "Complete" when it had finished it just went back to the command prompt after it had finished downloading all the 590 updates. I rebooted as per what the tut said and when I got back in nothing was different, same kernel and everything. I decided to check if anything had happened by doing a "yum update" again and it came up with 590 update found, total download size 1.5GB!!! Shouldn't I have already downloaded them! I didn't put in "y" again as shouln't they already be on my PC somewhere?

Thanx for any help, this is really stressing me out!

Probably the repository you were downloading from went offline oor there was another network problem. Yum has a cache directory, it will see the stuff it already downloaded successfully in there and not re-download stuff it already has, so you can safely press "y" again. I've had this happen with yum before ... it's not really a big deal.

This is the second time this has happened so I don't think it is an error. Also I checked /var/cache/yum/updates/packages and 575 of the files were in there and the rest were in yum/dries/packages. So it seems that they are all there so why do I keep getting this?:

I would really rather not download again (especially seeing as the files are there) as I have a 10GB data cap on my connection...to hit that with 3GB would not be nice. At least if I HAVE to do it again I want to make sure it will be the last time.

Thanx for all the help so far.

Andreal: Yum will check to see what has already been downloaded and will only download what it cannot find in the yum cache. So go ahead and say “y”.

Ahhh you were right btmiller, it just took whatshisname to knock it all the way into me :P that how newb I am.

There were two files that hadn't downloaded, when they had been downloaded everything went smoothly. Thanx for all your help people, I know how frustrating to deal with people who ask stupid things like myself but the fact that you keep doing it is a real show of characture.

Thanx once again!
