Yum looks in the files in /etc/yum.repos.d/ to determine the URLs it should use to find its repositories.

Do you have a file called /etc/yum.repos.d/core.repo? It looks like there may be a problem with the file, have a look at it and see if it includes a "baseurl=XXX" line, and see if you can navigate to the URL with a web browser.

What distro are you using?

I will take a guess from the "core" that you are running Fedora. Currently the only supported versions are F8 and F9. One month after F10 is released(roughly 1st Dec) support for F8 will be dropped(Jan 1st). When support is dropped for any version there are no further updates of any kind. Most repos keep the older data around until they need the space. With the recent newkey issue the vast majority of older data was removed and never replaced with a newkey version(so the old stuff is just gone).
