Smile Xubuntu Login Trouble

Greetings Linux sleuths!

I've had Xubuntu for almost a week now and it always logs me in automatically without prompting me for a password. Today it began prompting me to select a user (my name) or "other." I chose my name, typed my password (caps lock was off) and it still would not log me in. After trying this multiple times, I can confirm that it is not a simple typo in the password.

Any suggestions on how this happened and what I should do to remedy this?

Thanks,
Linuxtex noob

Here's a good tutorial on resetting your password:

I appreciate the suggestion, however the password is not the issue.

After the fireflies screen, it is not logging me automatically like normal. After that screen, it goes briefly to an all white screen (never happened previously) and then to the login/user prompt. I have a dual boot system, by the way.

I don't understand the question. What happens when you type your username and password?
