Unhappy Xandros 2 commands & OpenOffice confusion

Hi guys...

I'm a real newbie (ex Win98) and have just loaded Xandros 2.0 onto a brand new clean HDD from a CD. Everything (apparently) loaded OK but.....

OpenOffice wp is missing ALL it's text labels on drop-downs, toolbars, sidebar, tooltips etc. It seems to be functioning correctly otherwise (apart from being nearly impossible to use LOL!) and I've checked out all the available setting options (well, maybe I haven't?).

Also, it's not recognising my LG 52CDR when I insert a data CD, but works fine with an audio CD (ie: plays, lists tracks, shows control panel etc).

I've tried to read up on a few tutorials about mounting drives, commands, and file management but even their basics don't cover things like what is "root" or "console" or how to mount a CD. They tend to just say "do this next" or "at root" do this.

I can see why a lot of people give up on Linux, but I'm gonna persevere 'cos there's no way I'm going back to Windows!

I'd appreciate any help along these lines, and also any links to a very, very basic tutorial for Xandros.

Thanks in advance

Hi Crimson, welcome to LQ

as for the CDs - a data CD has to be mounted first - the command for that is "mount" and "umount" when you're finished. audio CDs are not mounted.

"being root" refers to logging in as the root, or superuser, and therefore having full read and write privelages on all files. its best to only use root when necessary for many reasons (eg, a mistake as a full-privelaged user can more easily destroy crucial files)

I'd recommend running a lot of searches here and google.com/linux with terms "beginner" "tutorial" "howto" "linux", etc. - also Redhat and Mandrake have excellent beginner documentation free on their sites:

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/fdoc.php3
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

most of that is applicable to any Linux distribution.

good luck

Supermount, also in use by Mandreck, allows you
to access media like CD-ROMS and flopppies without
manually mounting them...

Cheers,
