X windows, configured but unable to be connected

Hi everyone, I am a linux newbie... only about 2 months old. So if there are additional info you need me to highlight, pls tell me.

I am trying to configure X windows. I have modify the Xaccess, xdm-config and etc files. I even configured the firewall to allow port 177. But I still can't
connect to my linux using X-Win 3.2.

I am able to open up X-win on my client pc but all i see is blank and a cross icon, I see no error messages.

How do I ensure that X windows is working on the linux? If I am working in the GUI mode, isn't that considered as working? Also I am able to ping my linux machine.

What could be the possible reasons?
