Processes (in the form of their numbers) vary during installation, depending on a few different factors. You might want to check out the rc.d and similar directories in /etc to adjust the actual programs that are running.
ls -l
will show you the links to the files that are run when your computer starts. The various rc# levels do different things. rc1 is similar to safe mode in linux. No networking, just the minimum to start the system. rc3 is textmode. Everything works, but you start off in a dos-like mode. rc5 is your gui.
