Which file controls the processes that Fedora loads!

Hi. I know init is responsible for loading all the processes but when I went looking for it (ie /etc), I couldn't find it. I found other files that had a prefix with init in it but I do not think it was what I was looking for. I want to control which processes are loaded. I am using Fedora Core 1.

Also, I would like to know if there is a website that I can look up these processes to find out what they do.

Thanks for your help.

Processes (in the form of their numbers) vary during installation, depending on a few different factors. You might want to check out the rc.d and similar directories in /etc to adjust the actual programs that are running.

ls -l

will show you the links to the files that are run when your computer starts. The various rc# levels do different things. rc1 is similar to safe mode in linux. No networking, just the minimum to start the system. rc3 is textmode. Everything works, but you start off in a dos-like mode. rc5 is your gui.
