I always read something about printing. and they keep saying "spooler". What does spooler means. The cups, ppd, lpd, .... What is all that. In window I just know plug and play. Why setting up a printer need so many kinds of configurations. Please tell me.
The print spooler is just a disk cache that your print job is stored in prior to being sent to the printer. Using a print cache frees up CPU resources making your computer more responsive while the printing is going on. MSWin has essentially the same feature.
You are right in observing that printing is a lot more transparent on MSWin than on Linux.
