If you're running two instances of a program, then you're running two copies of it at the same time.

Hi there,

Welcome to LQ.

In what context did you come across this statement - what were you reading about?

Instances can mean a couple of things, including:

* multiple copies of a process, for example the "bash" process if you're logged in via more than one window/terminal/session
* multiple copies of an application (which may consist of more than one process in itself), for example Firefox, Apache or MySQL
* multiple Linux instances, if you're running some virtual machines
* containers

You can run Apache on a server right? In the Linux world, you can run 5 Apache's on a server as well. And each of those Apache's would be considered an 'instance.'
