What finger is used on LALT key?

Currently learning emacs, and the META key (alt) is extremely difficult to press, I keep on swapping what finger I used to press it sometimes losing the home row keys afterwords. I googled this and couldn't find anything.

I don't use Alt at all. Pressing and releasing ESC has exactly the same value.
