Don't you agree? Some beginners might want an out-of-the-box setup like Ubuntu or Mint, others might want something that takes a little more effort.

I would like to apologize for my outburst yesterday; but I have had it up to here with these smug, ignorant Windoze trolls who invade our space, needle us and waste our time because they have nothing better to do. I hate it that the knowledge, skills and experience that you have acquired over several years should be wasted on these scoundrels and their frivolity..unassuming and genteel folk that you are..when all you intend is to share it with anyone who asks.
I would like to thank the moderators and members for not retaliating with the harsh responses that my comment inevitably deserved, and politely ignoring me.

Depends on where you want to take this.

Begin with a distro that "works with you", like Ubuntu or Fedora. Pretty complete and they do most of the work for you. Then you could (if so inclined) move on to the more "demanding" flavors like Slackware or Arch. The path is yours, but your goal determines where you take this.

I went with Arch because it's litew8, rolling and educational, though it's tuff and the community can be somewhat hardened...

I've only tried Arch once, in VirtualBox, and I would say it's slightly more "demanding" to install than Slackware. Not beyond the abilities of the average human being, though, if that's what they want to do. As far as Linux knowledge goes, I still regard myself as a beginner.

That's one extreme, other typical troll pranks are;
1) “I am thinking of switching to Linux, could anyone recommend a distribution for newbies?”
This one is to provoke scores of responses from eager and earnest linux practitioners who end up arguing about the merits and demerits of each and every distribution among themselves. Note that this is the only post this kind of troll makes after which he sits back giggling like an ass by himself or with his cronies, without ever acknowledging any of the replies.

2) “I am switching back to Windows..”, says he's having too much trouble installing drivers, cannot connect to the Internet, or some such imaginary issue which he has read about”. This is again to get a large number of Linux users to try to convince him how Linux is not all that difficult and why he should stay with it, also explaining hundreds of ways of doing what he wants and providing an equal number of detailed instructions which he will never make use of because he never intended to in the first place.

In all cases the mark of a troll is that he will make only one or two provocative posts after which he will disappear from the scene.

Anyway, i have taken deep breaths, counted to hundred and calmed myself now..more power to you guys!

So do I, every day , that's what makes this what it is: educational. But...Arch, maybe not for a beginner. If I had Arch (or a "stubborn" distro) way back instead of Fedora 8, I may not have "dared" to venture on. A beginner "that wants to find out what Linux really is" should best begin with an easy one...
