Want to use a computer for file and printer server

Hi
I have a Computer running Windows 7 that I use just for file and printer sharing right now

Is there any minimalist type of OS that would allow me to use this computer just for using file and printer sharing without having to use Windows, using the least possible resources of the computer?

I don't want it to damage my Windows installation in any way so it has to able to live alongside windows (if it needs to write anything to the hard drive that is; if the OS can run completely from RAM after being loaded from CD or USB, then that is also fine as this computer has lots of RAM)
Also, I had some problems when trying to install drivers for this printer even when using Windows so even though the new OS has to be minimalistic, it would be better if it is user friendly enough for me to be able poke around, if it has problems detecting my printer
This particular server need not be able to print, however, the computers using it's printers will all be running Windows 7
Can anybody give me any hints about where I may get started?
Thanks in advance

Tiny Core Linux running Samba and Cups would fit your use case well.

All Linuxes are pretty lightweight in comparison to Windows though. You could probably pick one of the more common distros that might be better documented / easier to setup.
