I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I was having problems installing guest add-ons the other night, though I forget the exact error, it had something to do writing the kernel module(s). I was running Virtual box 2.2 on Linux Mint Gloria (derivative of Ubuntu 9.04) and installing Ubuntu 9.10 as Guest. My solution was to uninstall (sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-2.2) and download the latest virtualbox .deb file from the download site (3.x) and installing it.
Once installed, it automatically detected all of my installed virtual machines.
