View output of a running process

Hello all,

Newbie here. How can I view the output of a currently running process without restarting the process? Using the ps command to obtain the PID, can I use it, somehow, to look at the output of that process (kinda like a window to see what its doing)?

Thanks guys.

No, not as a generic rule; some processes, like dd, will let
you get some stats by sending them a special signal. But that's
implementation dependent, not a generic feature. You should be
able to see whether or not a program offers that kind of feature
from its man-page(s).

Cheers,
Tink
