VFS: Cannot open root device

I am using linux 2.6.10. I crossed compile the gcc for host=cygwin, and target=ARM9 platform.

a) I succeeded generating the cross-compiled tool.
b) I built non-compressed image, load and run up to kernel_init. I seem to be stuck in the "prepare_namespace()" function. The error message says that:
VFS: Cannot open root device"ram0" or unknown block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option

Can someone please tell me what is wrong here?

I am really stuck, please help...
Neil
