user login: could not resolve xml:readwrite: /home/.gconf

hi...i have gentoo and am not able to login as a normal user. Every time I try to do so, it comes up with the error:

could not resolve the address "xml:readwrite:/home/username/.gconf" in the configuration file "etc/gconf/2/path"
Couldnt resolve address for configuration source: cant read from or write to the XML root directory in the address "xml:readwrite:/home/username/.gconf"

Tried to read up about gconf and xml..but its a little confusing.

What Window Manager are you using? Whenever I get gconf errors, I log using Gnome, then log out, and then log in with my preferred WM, which is Fluxbox. Try using a different Window manager to log into. If you do not have one, press ctrl-alt-f2 to open a console login screen, and see if you can login that way.

Rebooting just may fix the problem, but I hope the above gives you some things to try.

Unfortunately not. For a while I was getting gconf xml read errors when I would start Firefox in Fluxbox. I would then log out of my Fluxbox session, select gnome as my shell, log in and out of gnome, and then go back to Fluxbox. After that procedure, the errors no long appeared and Firefox started fine.

I wish I could help more, but I just know that gconf is part of gnome and I was able to clear errors out by logging in and out of gnome.
