After repairing hardware problems Update Manager gave me the following response. Thank you!

[sudo] password for dick:
dpkg: error: parsing file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 13330 package 'alacarte':
'igstall ok installed' is not allowed for first (want) word in `status' field
dick@dick288A-ABA-854N:~$ sudo apt-get install -f
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Malformed 1st word in the Status line
E: Error occurred while processing alacarte (UsePackage2)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status

As a quick fix, try replacing /var/lib/dpkg/status with /var/lib/dpkg/status-old (if that file was automatically created during the update process), then re-run.
