Thumbs up Up-Date manager and Welcome screen

Been using linux for some time and recently moved up to Mint Cinnamon 18.1.
All was rosey, then lost my welcome screen, then noticed the red cross indicating trouble in the area of up-dates. On opening there was nothing, all gone, nothing to up-date.
Looking for a simple solution Thanks

Hi, malleefowl21, and welcome to LQ.

For the welcome screen, run mintwelcome from the command line and then click on "Show this dialogue at startup" in the bottom right of the welcome screen before closing it.

Regarding the update problem, please run apt update on the command line and paste the output here (using CODE tags if you can - see the # button on the LQ advanced editor).
