[QUOTE=John VV;5146640]"vi" is a terminal text editor
and it is NOT installed by default
YOU have to install "vim" first to be able to use VI

Code:
su -
yum install vim
then you will need to spend about a feww WEEKS just toi start to leearn to use that editor

cent has Gedit already installed and set as DEFAULT

just double click on the text file " INSTALL "
or
r-click on it ( the EXACT SAME AS IN WINDOWS!!! ) and select "open with gedit"

NO !!!!
"make instyall"
DID NOT !!!!! make a text file called "INSTALL"
that is NOT what that command dose

did you even read the instructions on the web site ??????

also the program " Katana " is a rather low lever VFX openGL shader
one that REQUIRES you to WRIGHT shadder code along with connecting "nodes" in the procedural process .

also did you READ the " how do i BUY katana
https://www.thefoundry.co.uk/product...na/katana-faq/

first did you BUY it
and you need other software also
like a render

PRMan 17.0
Arnold 4.0.11.0

from the FAQ:
Quote:
Does KATANA come with a renderer?

Yes. As a result of the technical collaboration between The Foundry and Pixar’s RenderMan any new customer purchasing KATANA will get a full RenderMan license and 10 batch licenses as standard with their first 10 interactive licenses purchased. This relationship and continuing developments firmly cement KATANA and RenderMan together as the ultimate rendering and lighting collaboration, while being open and agnostic remains central to both solutions.

------------------------
Why is there no trial or rental option for KATANA on the website?

Because we make KATANA so specifically configured to the user’s requirements, it’s been unsuitable to release as a general trial version. Contact sales@thefoundry.co.uk to discuss your precise requirements.
so
contact there sales
sales@thefoundry.co.uk

but you will need about $500,000 to $5,000,000 in hardware
to run Pixar's renderman on a render farm

As others mentioned, KATANA is a commercial product, therefore LinuxQuestions is not responsible of members that obtain bootleg copies of the software through torrent or other P2P tools, nor it will provide any kind of help to install such illegal copies.

Said this, if you downloaded the trial version of KATANA from their official site (and you should have registered for doing that) you should also find detailed installation instructions along with system requirements in the official online documentation or inside the installation package itself.

As advised a good free alternative is Blender.

At this point, there is no reason why this thread should stay open. Gshankar, since you're new and apparently a still inexperienced linux user, all I can say is beware of illegal downloads and go first to the official developers' sites, carefully reading about terms of use, licenses and prices.

Nuff' said.
