Unable to access wifi on s/h Dell E6430

Hello all, this is a refurbished Dell E6430 and I'm always going to be a newbie, sorry!

I've installed Peppermint 7 from an LXF disc and all appears to be well apart from internet wifi - wired connection is ok.

I have a D-LINK router/modem which works fine with other machines but not with this one. It's been a while since it was set up and I can't be sure I've answered all the questions correctly.

Any help or hints gratefully received - thankyou in anticipation!

Regards Ant

AntOne,

Your Dell 6430 uses Broadcom wifi which is infamous in Linux circles.

This LQ “sticky” from frankbell is helpful:

Another alternative would be to use antiX 16.1 since it automatically recognises and enables most Broadcom wifi cards:

To enable wifi in antiX 16.1 after installation:

Menu > Control Centre > Network > Network Interfaces (ceni) > wlan0 > follow wizard and give SSID/network name and wifi password.

Hello all, sorry a bit slow in replying.

My great thanks to everyone that took an interest and replied.

I have a confession to make; I had found a slide switch on the r/h end of the computer and it was apparently on. Not! The red "On" marker is on the actual switch slider and only shows when the switch is off. To my mind that doesn't make sense but in any case it should be on the case rather than the switch... I shall know another time!

Sorry and thankyou again - regards Ant
