Ubuntu wont let me leave

I am using Lubuntu. When I try to shut down the PC Ubuntu wont let me.
I tried shutdown and I tried Logout and shutdown but each time I am asked if I want to leave and lose any unsaved work.I select Yes,then I get a screen where I select the user ( which is me ) and my password ( as I am the only one using this PC I dont have a password )Then I go back to the Lubuntu desktop and start all over again.I am in an endless loop.To shut down the PC I had to unplug the battery and disconnect the power.
NB As above, when I am trying to shut down.Even the Power Off button does not work.

You are not shutting down the system, just logging out from the user-session. Which is the label of the function that you use?
If it is logout, then this is *not* what you want.

Can you open a terminal-window (lxterminal for example) and type
Code:
dieter@huesch:~$ poweroff
If you can and it works, maybe do it that way.

Thank you for your quick response.I will try that the next time I have trouble shutting down. But I have been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now and every other time I shut down all i had to do was select Shutdown from the menu at the lower left of the screen.
Surley I dont have to do what you suggest every time I want to leave Linux ?! There must be an easier way and also why did selecting shutdown work before and not now ?

Ubuntu is faulty(?) - you should be able to shutdown & power off.

You seem to be logging out, & being redirected to the login screen.

The shutdown program first stops all processes and then unmounts filesystems. This can take a while. How long did you wait?

In such situation it is good to have a look at running processes. It is possible there is background process doing some job - and it is not good time for shutdown. systemd also should have its own telinit command. I mean telinit on non-systemd is used to switch run level - telinit 0 switches to run level 0 - in this level system is halted and machine powered-off. So look for something similar for systemd. This is clean way to shutdown your system. But perhaps you will need admin privileges to use such command directly.

If she/he is immediately confronted with a login-screen, the problem is elsewhere.

First of all are you using Lubuntu or Ubuntu?

Second how long did you hold down the power button?

Thanks guys.
Next time I went on Lubuntu it shut down properly,so I tried starting up and shutting down 3/4 times and this time all went well.It looks like it may be a problem with Lubuntu. Is this normal or should I re-install Lubuntu ?
As for how long I waited.I am not doing much on Linux as I am just learning so there would not be many processes running.I selected shutdown and was taken to the login screen screen streight away and then the endless loop.

As I am here, could I ask another question.
The CD tray on my laptop is very stiff and on Windows I used to open/eject it from within Windows. Can I do the same with Lubuntu?
Many thanks in advance

I think you should start answering the questions posed. Why else would you be asking for help???
Along with commands entered & output received please. And use CODE tags for that (see my signature).

PS: being asked to enter a terminal command once does not mean you have to do it every time.

As the others have said please answer the questions we've asked you if you want us to help.
To open the CD there is a simple terminal command, i found it by using ddg
Code:
linux open cd tray command
It came back with this https://linuxcommando.blogspot.com/2...-tray.html?m=1
And to save you opening that url here is the command
Code:
eject
Type that at the terminal prompt like this
Code:
jonk@jonk-Len-usff:~$ eject
Report back on how that worked, and please answer the questions we've asked.

I tried what you suggested except I forgot to add Eject,so I typed "s dieter@huesch:~$" The PC shut down very quickly. That is what happened.
I dont understand what you mean about not answering people ?!
If you read my first reply, you will see that I thanked Michael U for his help,In my second reply I said that after restaerting up Lubuntu a few more times that fault did not happen again. What other replys did you want me to give ? In my first post I said I was using Lubuntu and had trouble shutting down,What else did you want me to say ?
When you say you dont expect to hear from me again, what does that mean ?
I have tried Linux for about 1 week and I am very interested but if I have to put up with your attitude........ Forget it.I will go back to Windows

It is not clear for me: do you have also Windows installed on this computer? I mean did your plan was to have both Windows and Ubuntu installed alongside? It is important. How did install your Ubuntu version?
