Question Ubuntu Server setup for LAN procedure needed

I've spent several days trying to configure Ubuntu server to run on my Ethernet LAN to test-run ICA-AtoM software - http://ica-atom.org/download.html - for our local museum.

I am using a Pentium III with 500 megs of ram and an 80 gig hard disk as my server. I previously loaded Ubuntu Desktop with no difficulties, but have now replaced it with Ubuntu Server

The Ubuntu Server installation CD created from the ISO file seems to work fine. Gnome-core seems to work fine on the server PC.

I can't seem to install webadmin after downloading it to desktop to determine my server address details and I haven't been able to find detailed instructions on how to access the server from the other PCs on my LAN.

The Ubuntu website procedure doesn't seem to get to the really basic steps.

Can anybody help?

Thanks, Murphy.

Did you download Webadmin from a Ubuntu repository?

Are the other PCs running Linux or Windows? If Windows, you'll need to set up Samba. You'll also want to configure the server with a fixed IP address instead of DHCP.

Thanks,

I managed to download and install "webmin" (not "webadmin") and I'm now able to access the server via webmin from its own Firefox browser and the Firefox browser on another Windows XP PC on the Ethernet LAN. I've also set up Samba.

I'm still trying to set the fixed IP address. However, I'm not sure where to do it or how to be sure I'm not in conflict with other computers on my LAN.

The question I'd ask is where are you getting your IP from? DHCP servers often have the ability to assign a set IP to a given MAC address for example, so you may want to investigate that option.
