Ubuntu 5.10 screen resolution problem

I am running Ubuntu 5.10 and using a 17" KDS CRT monitor. Sometimes when I start up Ubuntu it works perfectly. Then, other times I load it up the resolution and the refresh rate is all messed up and it can't be changed. It does this on and off all of the time. I noticed when it is working right and when it isn't working the refresh rates and screen resolution is different. I didn't know if there was a driver or anything I can do to fix this problem.

Edit the HorizSync and VertRefresh statement in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to within the limits of your monitor and the problem should go away.
