I am gradually getting to grips with Ubuntu 11.10.
One small problem!
All the programs I use open OK and work as I would expect. However, when I open GNU Cash, the Status Bar (the bar along the top of the screen - the one that brings up the drop-down menus - when the mouse hovers over it) appears, but is blank, i.e. it should show the Program Name etc. So, I can't access the drop-down menus?
The program works fine and all other programs open with the Status Bar in place?
Occasionally I have a similar issue except the title bars in all of the open windows dissappear...
I just use compiz config to turn off window decoration and then turn it back on.
Do you mean the menu bar? Can you access the menus using the Alt- key?
This problem only occurs with GNUCash. I didn't matter what I tried - Keyboard shortcuts (Alt F10). So, I have used another simple financial package (HomeBanK) - which works fine?

Hope this fixes your problem!
