Ubuntu 11.10 not booting up

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 Series laptop with a Intel 5 core processor and 4 gigabytes of memory. I run both Windows 7 Enterprise and Ubuntu 11.10. I had just restarted my computer after installing the updates for Ubuntu 11.10 but it just shows the velvet screen when I try to boot up Ubuntu. However, it was working perfectly before and Windows starts up with no problems. Also, I can't even get to the command line so I can't put in commands. What is going on?

I do not know if this works with ubuntu but you could give it a try. When the system is booting, if you press F1 or F2, you will get the command line output of the processes that get started. You can see what is holding up the boot from this output ... potentially!

After the purple screen appears press cntrl+alt+F1, you should be see a text mode login screen appear. Log in and uninstall what ever you updated and reboot. It might help.
