trouble with ubuntu remote desktop

I log into the ubuntu host that i want to
connect to :

ssh -X -l <username> <ipaddress>

then type vino-preferences into the host terminal

and it says that i can log into the session with :

vinagre caspermac.nyc.rr.com:0

however i when execute this command, the remote desktop
screen comes up but i get a popup that says --- connection to host 'caspermac.nyc.rr.com:5900' was closed

remote desk with ssh vnc tunnel

Good. You're trying to tunnel vnc through ssh.

I hope this helps:
Assuming that caspermac.nyc.rr.com is your local machine, try
ssh -X -l <username> -L 8888:<ipaddress1>:5900 <ipaddress1>

then do a 'vinagre caspermac.nyc.rr.com:8888'

Note: Port 8888 is an arbitrary high unused port.
Remember to start a "vnc server" on the remote machine.
